Tax Filing Deadline for U.S. Citizens Living Abroad
If you’re a U.S. citizen or resident alien living abroad, you have extra time to file your 2024 federal income tax return — but there are still critical rules and deadlines to keep in mind. The IRS has set Monday, June 16, 2025 as the extended deadline to file and pay taxes without penalty for eligible taxpayers overseas.
Who Qualifies for the June 16 Extension?
You’re eligible for this automatic two-month extension if:
- You live outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and your main place of business is also outside these territories.
- You’re in military or naval service stationed abroad.
No formal application is needed, but you must attach a statement to your tax return explaining which condition applies.
Need More Time?
If you can’t file by June 16, you may request an extension to October 15, 2025 using IRS Form 4868 (individuals) or Form 7004 (businesses). However, remember:
- This extension only applies to filing, not to tax payments.
- Interest applies to any tax due not paid by the original April 15, 2025 deadline.
Payment Options for Overseas Taxpayers
Paying taxes from abroad is easier than ever:
- Use the IRS Online Account, IRS Direct Pay, or EFTPS for secure transfers.
- No U.S. bank account? You can wire funds from a foreign account (see IRS foreign payments page).
- Debit cards, credit cards, and digital wallets are also accepted (fees may apply).
Special Circumstances & Deadlines
- Military personnel serving in combat zones may qualify for further automatic extensions. See IRS Publication 3 for more.
- Taxpayers affected by the conflict in Israel, Gaza, or the West Bank have until September 30, 2025 to file and pay 2023 and 2024 taxes.
Reporting Foreign Income and Assets
Even if you’re living overseas, you’re still required to:
- Report worldwide income on your U.S. tax return.
- Complete Schedule B and possibly Form 8938 if you have foreign accounts or assets exceeding specific thresholds.
- File an FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) if your foreign financial accounts totaled more than $10,000 at any point in 2024. The FBAR deadline is April 15, 2025, but there is an automatic extension to October 15, 2025.
All figures must be reported in U.S. dollars, using the December 31 exchange rate.
Relinquishing U.S. Citizenship or Green Card?
If you gave up your citizenship or permanent resident status in 2024, you must file a dual-status return. See IRS Publication 519 for guidance, or better yet — let us help.
